Top Rejected Claims for Travel Insurance

When submitting a claim for travel insurance, it is usually due to an unfortunate event that occurred during the trip. The last thing anyone wants is for their claim to be rejected, adding insult to injury. To prevent this, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the coverage provided by the insurance before embarking on the trip. If there is a specific coverage that is desired but not included in the plan document, it is recommended to carefully review the available plan options, such as the Basic and Choice options offered by Seven Corners, which offer different levels of protection for both the traveler and the trip.

What are the potential reasons for a claim to be rejected? Below are some of the most frequent causes and strategies to prevent them.

1. The date of your claim is prior to your effective date

Travel insurance can be divided into two categories: trip protection and travel medical insurance. Trip protection offers trip cancellation benefits that can be used before embarking on your trip, while travel medical insurance primarily covers medical expenses for illnesses and injuries that may occur during the trip, rather than beforehand.

Keeping this in consideration, it is crucial to be aware of your effective date. This information is available in your plan document. Any claims for occurrences that occurred prior to your effective date will be rejected as they occurred before your plan went into effect.

When purchasing travel medical insurance, it is important to do so in advance. The coverage can only start at 12:01 a.m. on the day after purchase, but not until you have left your home country. Although the coverage does not begin until you have departed from your home country, initiating it on your departure date ensures that you will be covered if you happen to get injured or fall ill during a layover in a foreign country.

Consider this scenario: I depart from the United States on August 1 for a trip to South Africa. However, my flight has a layover in Amsterdam and I don't arrive in Cape Town until August 2. In order to ensure coverage, I would like my insurance to start on August 1, even though I won't reach my final destination until the next day. This will provide protection in case of illness or injury during my layover in Amsterdam.

2. The treatment you were given was considered routine or preventative

Travel medical insurance plans typically provide coverage for short periods of time and specifically cover unexpected illnesses or injuries while you are traveling. It is assumed that your primary health insurance in your home country will take care of regular checkups and preventive care.
Be sure to review your plan document before departing to prevent rejection of this claim. If the document states that routine or preventive care is not included, it is recommended to schedule your checkup before leaving (which is a wise choice regardless, particularly if your trip will be lengthy) or wait until you return home to utilize your main health coverage.

3. The reason was not covered

The reason mentioned is relevant to the Trip Protection plans offered by Seven Corners.
If your trip is canceled or interrupted due to covered reasons, trip protection plans can reimburse you for your nonrefundable expenses that were prepaid. However, if you choose to cancel or interrupt for a reason that is not included in the list of covered reasons, such as feeling uneasy about the safety of your destination, your claim will not be approved.

To prevent the possibility of having your claim rejected, you may consider buying Cancel for Any Reason coverage. This extra feature allows you to cancel your trip for any reason, not just the reasons listed in your trip protection plan, and receive a reimbursement of 75% of your nonrefundable trip expenses.

The coverage for Interruption for Any Reason (IFAR) operates in a similar manner. If you choose to terminate your journey and return home before its planned completion, the additional IFAR coverage can provide reimbursement for 75% of the prepaid, nonrefundable costs that were not used, regardless of the reason for interrupting your trip.

To avoid facing such claims, it is advisable to carefully review the plan document and comprehend the reasons that are covered. This will ensure that you are aware of your coverage before making any changes to your travel plans. It may even be possible to modify your coverage or select a different plan in advance, preventing any last-minute realization that the desired protection was not included.

4. The deadline for filing has passed

In essence, this is an alternative way of stating that the deadline was not met. Typically, insurance companies enforce a maximum timeframe for filing. If the necessary documentation is not submitted within the specified period, your claim may be rejected.

To prevent denied claims, it is important to file your claim promptly after an incident. It is also advisable to review your plan document to determine the specific time limit for filing. Typically, plans have a 90-day filing limit.
